Protein signals the body to stop eating once it starts to feel “full.” Researchers believe that part of protein's ability to satisfy may come from its thermic effect – the additional calories expended simply by the act of digesting dietary protein.
A Penn Sate University study
has shown that the consumption of dietary protein can enhance
the “full/satisfied feeling” and promotes overall health
better than fats or carbohydrates. Dr. Barbara Rolls,
renowned nutrition expert and Guthrie Chair of Nutrition
at Penn State University, reminds us that eating enough
protein-rich, lower-calorie foods increases satiety and
slightly increases metabolism. |
